Making Change

I love the beginning of a new school year. The air seems to be just heavy with potential. If you are at all like me, you want to capitalize on a new start and you set a lot of high goals. Usually my goals are too large to manage and they don't happen. I can usually pinpoint the problem as not being realistic or as a failure to act.

Acting and changing ourselves to fulfill goals is hard. Fortunately we are not alone in making change; Christ is there and makes change possible if we give our hearts to Him. But how do we do that? Giving our hearts to Christ requires faith and action. An Old Testament scripture helps us see how to give our hearts up to God...

“Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord. Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.”
Lamentations 3:40-41

I love the imagery of this scripture. We examine ourselves and hand over our hearts to God as we do things to bring ourselves closer to Him. It comes down to those simple Sunday School answers: study your scriptures, say your prayers, go to church, and finding ways to serve others.

As the new semester starts, I challenge you to set goals, but don't forget to prioritize and first give the Lord your heart with your actions. As you do so, you'll have the perspective to better search your ways and find room for improvement. You may find that some of the goals you wanted to set really don't matter, but the Lord may open your eyes to goals you never may have considered realized. As you turn to Christ, He will help you make the changes necessary to reach your goals.
