Let’s talk about food, one of my favorite topics. It’s hard to know how to take care of yourself properly when there is so much information, much of it conflicting. Do you go heavy on protein and cut carbs? What is the paleo diet? Is gluten really bad for you? Fats used to be bad, but now people say they are good?
Like I said, there is a lot of information and misinformation out there. Much of the conflict comes because there are many unknowns when it comes to nutrition. But there are still many things that the scientific community does know! And we are finding out many things every day.
Because information is changing, the advice we are given changes. Here are some of the changes in the advice from the USDA alone over the years
And the newest of all . . .
The MyPlate version of advice is by far my favorite for several reasons
It shows the proportions of foods instead of giving a vague range of numbers
- The online website has a great food tracker that will break down your meals into servings
- The website also give reports for specific nutrients (sodium, protein, calcium) and which foods are the greatest contributors
- The information is all scientifically based
- They have great practical tips for each food group
To help spread sound nutrition, I will be doing a mini-series on the blog focusing on ways to improve choices from each food group. I will also be including some recipes, so stay posted!
