I recently watched a documentary that aired on PBS and it was life changing for me. It is called "Half the Sky" and it is about how to turn women's oppression into opportunity all around the world. Being a woman in the United States, I forget how bad women have it in other parts of the world. Although women do not have completely equal rights off paper in the US, at least we have basic rights and a legal system that can be trusted. There are women in other parts of the world who live in complete darkness. I think it is irresponsible to keep our blinders on. Here is a clip from from the documentary.
I am grateful that I am a woman in a church that has a very different view of women than the world does. I am grateful for the knowledge that I am a Daughter of God and that I have infinite value. I deserve to be respected and listened to. I am equal to men in value. I feel safe and empowered.
We need to use our female voices to speak up for other women who are oppressed in our communities and in other parts of the world. Do not stand for the violence, maltreatment, disrespect, exploitation, and abuse of women and children. Men can also be women's advocates! There are good men all around the world who are fighting for women's rights along side women. Be a brave force for good :)
