Celebrate LOVE—Not Romance

February is here and everyone is breaking out the red and pink everywhere I go. For some, this triggers the gag reflex. Valentine's Day seems like a very contradicted holiday. People love it or they hate it. Specifically, many of my single friends hate the holiday, because they feel excluded from it or it is a reminder of their relationship status (which shouldn't be depressing). I wish we could all be happy with what we are and where we are in life. When I was in creative writing in high school, I had a teacher who introduced me to a new way of celebrating Valentine's Day and I love it and have done it for 10 years now. She said:

"Valentine's Day should be about celebrating anything you love, not just storybook romance."

In her class we would celebrate chocolate and art and literature and roller-blading and scuba-diving. This kind of celebration makes Valentine's Day rock no matter who you are. This year, try writing a kind note to someone you care about, getting flowers for a loving parent, or a good friend. Have an all-day-marathon of something you love like movies, cooking, video games, or dancing. Love yourself, and treat yourself to a day full of things you love and enjoy that make you happy. What ever or whoever it is that you love, find a way to celebrate that on Valentine's Day. There is plenty of LOVE to go around! :)
