A feminist man? What is that? Is that even possible?
YES!
Amanda Chatel wrote a fabulous article on whether or not men can be feminists.
Chatel asks the reader, "How could a woman not want a feminist man?"
1. A feminist man "knows that my body belongs to me alone."
Chatel writes, "Although we're partners, he understands that my body, and all decisions regarding it, are mine. While I'll always respect his input, he realizes that I'm capable enough to make my own decisions." Here at BYU we recognize how important our bodies are. We should respect our own bodies as well as those bodies of the opposite sex.
2. A feminist man "doesn't subscribe to gender stereotypes in our relationship."
This does not mean that the world is turned upside down. It means that the couple should decide what works and what is need in their relationship and for their family.
3. A feminist man "doesn't make sexist jokes."
Chatel argues, "[T]here's a time and place for everything"; however, sexist jokes are "degrading, hurtful, and just inappropriate." Just don't do it.
4. A feminist man rears "his daughter to be a feminist."
Chatel explains that a feminist man rears his daughter with a "knowledge that she is capable of anything, and that her gender is not something that should ever be considered a roadblock to her success." As a result, a feminist man's daughter will have greater independence and self-esteem.
5. A feminist man is "passionate about women's rights."
You both should be able to have serious discussions and conversations about what is important to you, including women's rights.
6. A feminist man understands that "physical appearance isn't everything."
A feminist man realizes that bodies change. Chatel explains, "He knows that wrinkles and the aging process are part of the deal, and that I'll never be a Photoshopped photo of perfection. After a lifetime of feeling self conscious about my so-called flaws, I now realize they're lovable and, to him, 'perfect.'" A feminist man will love you for you.
BYU women: do not lower your expectations. You deserve to be treated appropriately. There are feminist men out there. You will not be forever alone if you demand to be treated with respect.
